How to back up DocuSign (and restore deleted data)

Why DocuSign's Deleted folder and retention policy are not a backup

Signed agreements are records you may need to produce years later. DocuSign's own recovery paths are built around something else: keeping the account tidy (all checked 2026-09-16):

Two of those rows deserve a closer look. The 24-hour Deleted window is the shortest of any platform ProBackup covers. And a Document Retention policy is not a safety net; it is the opposite. Set retention to 365 days and every completed contract is queued for deletion on its first anniversary, with a reminder email as the last line of defence.

That is fine for a policy designed to purge. It is a problem when a sales team, a finance team or an auditor assumes "it is in DocuSign" means "it is kept".

How to back up DocuSign with ProBackup (step by step)

Setup takes about three minutes.

What is (and is not) backed up for DocuSign

ProBackup backs up all data the DocuSign API exposes within its scope:

• Envelopes (status, recipients, timestamps) [verify: recipient data is included in the envelope record]
• Documents (the files inside each envelope, including completed, signed PDFs)
• Folders
• Comments

Not backed up today:

• Templates
• PowerForms

These are not available through DocuSign's API; ProBackup will add them as soon as they become available. Templates are configuration rather than records, so the practical mitigation is to keep the source documents used to build them in a backed-up location.

Version history depends on your plan: Plus keeps 6 months of snapshots, Pro keeps 2 years and Premium keeps an unlimited history. For agreements, Premium's unlimited history is usually the right fit: a contract signed in 2026 is still retrievable in 2031, regardless of what a retention policy did to the DocuSign copy.

How to restore deleted DocuSign data

Be direct about this: ProBackup cannot push data back into DocuSign. Due to API limitations, restore to the DocuSign account is not possible. On other platforms ProBackup offers two restore modes (create new duplicate records, or overwrite existing records field by field); DocuSign's API allows neither.

For signed agreements that is less of a limitation than it sounds. A completed envelope is a finished record; nobody needs it re-signed. What you need is the document and its metadata, on demand:

1. Open the DocuSign backup in ProBackup and select the snapshot from before the deletion or purge.
2. Locate the envelope by folder, subject or date.
3. View the envelope record and its comments, and download the signed document files.
4. Hand the export to whoever asked: legal, finance, an auditor or the counterparty.

This works after the 24-hour Deleted window, after a purge, and after a Document Retention policy has removed the documents from DocuSign, which is exactly where DocuSign's own tools stop.

How long does DocuSign keep a deleted envelope?

Twenty-four hours in the Deleted folder, after which it is no longer accessible from your account and recovery requires a Customer Support case (DocuSign developer documentation, checked 2026-09-16). A purged envelope cannot be recovered at all, even by DocuSign Support.

Does ProBackup back up DocuSign templates?

No. Templates and PowerForms are not exposed by DocuSign's API and are outside the backup scope. Envelopes, documents, folders and comments are included and captured daily.
