Slack backs up its servers. ProBackup protects your work.
Daily snapshots of your channels, direct messages, thread replies and files. Go back to any day and restore what went wrong.
No credit card required. 2-minute setup.
ProBackup for Slack is a SaaS backup service that takes an automated snapshot of the public channels, private channels and direct messages the connected admin can access, including files, every 24 hours, stores it encrypted in the AWS region you choose, and restores messages or channels as copies back into Slack. On workspaces connected since 29 May 2025, Slack limits how much older history an app can read. Available since November 2021.
Step by step: how to back up Slack
Doesn't Slack back up my data?
Slack keeps its own servers safe, but it offers no backup you can restore from yourself. Deleting a message or a channel is permanent.
A deleted message
-
Deleting a message is permanent. Owners and admins can delete other members' messages too.
- With ProBackup: Stays in your backup for your plan's history (6 months up to 4 years). You restore it yourself, as a new message with its thread replies and files.
A deleted channel
-
Deleting a channel is permanent, and its messages go with it. Only archived channels can be brought back.
- With ProBackup: Email when a channel has dropped out of your backup, plus a report of deleted messages. Restore the channel as a new one, with its messages and thread replies.
Messages past retention
-
Free plan: 90 days of history, and anything older than a year is deleted. On paid plans owners can set a retention period, and what it deletes is gone for good.
- With ProBackup: Messages Slack removes stay in your backup for your plan's history. Pick any day and read them back.
A full copy
-
Manual export. On Free and Pro it covers public channels only (file links, not files); private channels and DMs need Business+ or Enterprise and an approved request.
- With ProBackup: Automatic every 24 hours, with private channels, DMs and files the connected user can access. Browsable by day, Excel export, Google Drive sync (Pro and Premium).
Use Slack's archive for channels you closed. Use ProBackup for anything deleted, expired or older.

Visit the help centerWhat Slack data is backed up?
The following data types are backed up: public channels, private channels and direct messages the connected user can access, with their thread replies and files. Conversations that user can't see are not included. On workspaces connected since 29 May 2025, Slack lets apps like ProBackup read only a few older messages per channel, so the backup holds the latest messages from before you connected and everything after.
How does restore work for Slack?
Messages and channels are restored as new copies; nothing existing is overwritten. A message is posted again in its channel with its thread replies and files. A channel comes back as a new channel (named after the original, with "_restored_" and the date) with its messages and thread replies. Files can't be restored on their own: they come back with their message.
Does ProBackup back up my older Slack history?
It depends on when ProBackup was first installed on your workspace. Since 29 May 2025, Slack lets apps outside its Marketplace read only 15 messages per request, once a minute. For workspaces connected since then, ProBackup keeps the latest messages already in each channel and every new message from the day you connect. Workspaces connected before that date were backed up with their full history.
How safe is my data?
The backups and the access tokens are secured with the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) using a 256-bit encryption key. Applying the best practices of encryption methods, we use a different initialisation vector for every record, meaning it is virtually impossible to extract the data via reverse engineering.
Do I need a license for each team member?
No, you only need one ProBackup license to back up your team's data. The pricing model is not based on the number of seats – instead you pay to back up your own account and the connected accounts.
Can I build this myself?
You can. With an AI coding tool, a script that exports your data every night is a weekend project. The hard part comes after that: keeping it working when the app's API changes, storing the copies encrypted and away from the app, noticing when a run quietly misses data, and restoring, which means rebuilding records with their comments, files and links in the right place without overwriting today's work. ProBackup does that for 20+ apps. It keeps a version of every record each day it changes, emails you when a backup stops running, checks the APIs of its largest integrations against known-good responses every week, is SOC 2 Type II audited, and lets you browse any day and restore it.
