In short: Attio has no recycle bin. Once a record is deleted "it cannot be recovered by you or your team", and its notes and files go with it. ProBackup takes a daily snapshot of your Attio workspace and restores deleted people, companies, deals, notes, tasks, comments and files, as new records or by overwriting selected fields on records that still exist.
Why Attio's own protection is not a backup
Attio is fast, flexible and AI-native, and that flexibility cuts both ways. Any member with write access to an object can delete records, one at a time or in bulk from a list view, and a CSV bulk update can rewrite an attribute across thousands of records in one import. Attio keeps its platform running; what happens inside your workspace is yours to protect.
What Attio gives you natively (checked 2026-09-16):
- Deletion is final. Attio's own help centre says: "Take caution with deleting records, as once a record is deleted, it cannot be recovered by you or your team." It adds: "Any linked notes and files are also deleted. References to the record in tasks, notes, note templates, and comments are removed." Source: Attio, Merge and delete records
- Bulk delete is two clicks. From any Records page, tick the checkboxes, click More, then Delete records. Same source.
- Exports are manual and partial. Any table or kanban view can be exported as CSV or Excel, but "every column visible in your table view will become a column in the exported file", so hidden attributes, notes, tasks and files are not included. Record IDs are included. Source: Attio, Export lists and views
- No rollback for edits. A bulk update via CSV import overwrites attribute values in place; Attio documents no way to revert a record to a previous value. [verify: no native version history for attributes] Source: Attio, Bulk update records or lists via CSV import
| Scenario | Attio native | ProBackup |
|---|---|---|
| One company record deleted yesterday | Cannot be recovered | Restore it as a new record from yesterday's snapshot |
| 500 people deleted in bulk | Cannot be recovered | Select all 500 in the snapshot and restore in one action |
| Attribute values mangled by a CSV bulk update | No rollback; a corrective import needs the old values, which you no longer have | Overwrite mode: pick the affected fields and write yesterday's values back, IDs and relationships intact |
| Note deleted together with its record | Deleted with the record | Restore the note as a duplicate |
| Point-in-time copy of the workspace | Manual CSV export of one view, visible columns only | Daily snapshot of every object, list, note, task, comment and file, kept for 6 months (Plus), 2 years (Pro) or unlimited (Premium) |
How to back up Attio with ProBackup
ProBackup is a SaaS backup service that takes automated daily snapshots of your cloud app data and lets you restore individual records, files or whole projects back to the original account. For Attio, that means a daily copy of your companies, people, deals, lists, notes, tasks, comments and files, stored encrypted on AWS S3.
- Start a trial at app.probackup.io/onboarding. The 7-day trial needs no credit card.
- Select Attio and connect via OAuth. Attio shows its own authorisation screen; you approve the access scopes and ProBackup never sees your password. Access can be revoked from Attio at any time. Connect with a workspace admin so every object and list is readable. [verify: admin requirement for the Attio OAuth app]
- Choose your storage region. Nine AWS regions are available; you select one at signup. Changing region after the first backup requires support assistance.
- Let the first snapshot run. It starts automatically and completes within 24 hours. After that, ProBackup takes a new snapshot every 24 hours with no scheduling on your side, and stores a new revision only for records that changed. Smart retries reschedule any request that hits Attio's API rate limits.
- Optional extras. Smart Alerts (Pro and Premium plans) warn you when a snapshot shows a mass deletion. Google Drive sync (Pro and Premium plans) keeps a spreadsheet copy per object; if an object has more than 50,000 records no Sheet is created, but the AWS backup remains active.
Snapshots are encrypted with AES-256 at rest and TLS in transit. ProBackup is SOC 2 Type II certified (since May 2025) and GDPR compliant.
What is (and is not) backed up
ProBackup backs up what the Attio API exposes:
| Data type | Backed up | Restore |
|---|---|---|
| Companies, people, deals | Yes | Yes: as new records, or overwrite selected fields |
| Lists (and list entries) | Yes | View and export [verify: list entries restored with records?] |
| Notes | Yes | Yes, as a duplicate |
| Tasks | Yes | Yes, as a duplicate |
| Comments | Yes | Yes, as a duplicate |
| Files | Yes | Yes, as a duplicate |
| Users and workspaces | Yes | View only |
| Custom objects | [verify] | [verify] |
Not backed up: emails, calls, reports, sequences, workflows and chats. These are not exposed via the Attio API, so no backup tool can capture them today; ProBackup extends scope as the API allows. ProBackup captures only the first 2,000 characters of a text field. [verify: applies to Attio long-text attributes]
How to restore deleted Attio records, notes and files
- Open your Attio backup in ProBackup and pick the object (for example, People).
- Choose the snapshot date, the last one taken before the deletion or the bad import. Global Search finds a record across snapshots (unlimited on Pro and Premium; 3 free uses per month on Plus).
- Select one record or a filtered set and click Restore.
- Choose the restore mode: - Create new records "creates a copy of the selected records in the related Attio table". This is "the safest option and does not affect any existing Attio record". Use it for deleted records. - Overwrite existing records "updates existing records with the backed-up field values". A field picker lets you choose exactly which attributes to write back. Use it to roll back a bad bulk edit or CSV import on records that still exist; the record ID, list memberships and relationships stay intact.
- Notes, tasks, comments and files are restored as duplicates in either case.
Two things to know before you click:
- Deleted records need "create new". Overwrite targets a record that still exists in Attio; a deleted record has nothing to overwrite. The restored copy receives a new Attio record ID, so re-link any integration that stored the old one.
- After an import gone wrong, prefer overwrite. It keeps IDs and relationships, so nothing downstream breaks. Create-new would leave you with duplicates to merge.
Restores go back to the original Attio workspace only. ProBackup is not a migration tool.
Frequently asked questions
Can you recover a deleted record in Attio?
Not natively. Attio's help centre states that once a record is deleted "it cannot be recovered by you or your team", and linked notes and files are deleted with it (checked 2026-09-16). With ProBackup, the record exists in the last daily snapshot taken before the deletion and can be restored as a new record, together with its notes, tasks, comments and files.
Does ProBackup back up Attio emails and sequences?
No. Emails, calls, reports, sequences, workflows and chats are not exposed via the Attio API, so they are outside the backup scope. Companies, people, deals, lists, notes, tasks, comments, files, users and workspaces are covered.
What is the difference between "create new" and "overwrite" when restoring Attio data?
Create new writes a copy of the backed-up record into the Attio table and leaves everything that exists untouched: the safe default for deleted records. Overwrite updates a record that still exists with the backed-up values for the fields you pick, keeping its ID and relationships: the right choice after a bad bulk edit or CSV import.
